In many ways, Ana Voog has had the “huevos” to shatter the super-egoistic glass ceiling of many social mores-- all without becoming a homicidal maniac. To the contrary, and to be sure, with her post-modern blurred and reestablished boundaries between art and life, from meandering deconstructive crocheting and caustic self-sexploitation to photographing mundane everydayness and years of sleeping on a stage (reminiscent of Sophie Calle’s 1979 work, “The Sleepers”)-- Ana has transcended narcissistic image making and breaking, in what could be called “post-egoism”: the self-as-product myth exploded across the internet, as Ana has reached out from her home and head seducing the universe to look in on the Anaverse-- to look in on the highs, lows, and many in-betweens-- as her brilliant fire has emerged and matured in an ever refined journey of the self-discovery and expression of a genuine, if not an angelic nor an ordinary, human being.
The book “Ana Voog – Dreaming on Stage” was edited and designed, in coordination with Ana Voog, by schizophrenic artist J.D. Casten, who was drawn to Ana’s 24/7 webcam project in part due to his own experience with (delusional) 24/7 thought-broadcasting, and also due to the relevance he found between Ana’s art and his interest in deconstructive philosophy.
Ana Voog – Dreaming on Stage, is nothing more nor less than an edited collection of Ana Voog’s photography, art and writings with a brief introduction to situate Mr. Casten’s self-effacing minimalist approach to curating the work—the book itself really has no author, but rather a subject with a unique voice (the work of Ana Voog) and an editor with an eye for quality. The book is arranged chronologically, to better illustrate the development of Ana's art, with many images arranged in series, and often thematically tied with the text. It is something of a bargain to get so many “miniature prints” of an artist’s work at these prices.
The shorter 98 page softbound “abridged” edition has over 500 color images (on 70+ pages, 20 images taking up a full page, with one two-page spread), and 20 pages of text with over 12,000 words. The hardbound “deluxe edition” is three times as long, and includes art and writings by Rachael Olson prior to 1997 and her 24/7 webcam project as “Ana Voog,” as well as a larger selection of writings, photography, and artworks from the 1997-2007 Ana Voog “period” (which continues to this day – although Ana is now busy raising a child). Also, the 300 page hardbound edition contains some images of a more explicit nature, and the selection of writings delves into more personal aspects of her life. All writings and images in the abridged edition can also found in the deluxe edition, which has over 1200 color images (on 220+ pages, 50+ images taking up a full page, with one two-page spread), and 70 pages of text with over 42,000 words. A maximum of 250 copies of the hardbound “deluxe edition” will be printed.
